Three Chelsea Gems: A Great Eat, A Great Sleep and A Great Shopping resource
The Great Sleep is the Chelsea Green Hotel, an elegant townhouse just a block from Sloane Avenue and the Brompton/Fulham cross. For someone very special, ask about the Thai Suite. The Standard and deluxe rooms are all nice, management is very pleasant and accommodating and the location is dynamite. Doubles from around £180.

or visit their web site at: www.welcome2london.com
The Great Eat is Monza Restaurant. Monza is a super little Italian choice, tucked away on a mews street less than five minutes from Harrods, and a pleasant ten minute walk from the Chelsea Green Hotel. They are open for lunch and dinner daily, except Monday lunch. Expect to pay between £25-30 per person. They are a 6 Yeomans Row Tel: 0207 591 0210 email at: monzarestaurant@msn.com
The Great Shopping resource is: For visitors looking for the unusual, contact Shirley Eaton, a multi-talented Londoner who will help you find whatever your heart desires. If you only want to wander through Selfridges and Harrods, you don't need Shirley. If you are looking for the unusual for your home or for yourself, at a price you can afford, Shirley is your best resource. An added bonus for those coming to London is the possibility of renting her beautiful Chelsea townhome, that reflects her decorating expertise and innate good taste. Both her services and home are affordable and a super value for the money. The House is on three levels, has a small garden and sleeps 6 very comfortably. Contact Shirley by phone at: 0207 581 8429 or send her a fax at: 0207 854 0782. When you see her, give her my best.
GREAT EATS
575,000 restaurant meals are served daily in central London, yet 66% of these daily diners think London restaurants are a poor value. Who can blame them when current statistics also show that the average cost of a 3-course meal w/a glass of wine is £30 ($45), with the tip(12.5%) extra.
How to cope? Watch for 2 and 3 course set meals offered for both lunch and pre-theatre (between 6-7:30 p.m.) which will cost upto 50% less that the exact same meal served a la carte for dinner.
GREAT SLEEPS
Hotel prices for most American visitors to London will induce instant sticker shock. No wonder when the average price is $150 for a small room, maybe with
private facilities but always with limited closet space and a chair...if you are lucky. However there are some Great Sleeping values, notably:
The James Cartreff House on Ebury St. This family-run B&B is completely non-smoking, spotlessly clean, has sweetly decorated rooms, but no lift.
Another Great Sleeping value is the Winchester Hotel on Warwick Way. Some of their very nicely decorated rooms are non-smoking, there is a lift, a very good restaurant, and very hands-on-owners, Nick and Sylvia Hambi. Both of these are close to Victoria.
Changes and improvements to the Georgian Hotel
include no-smoking rooms on all the top floor;
showers in all bathrooms, and a complimentary bottle
of mineral water upon arrival. An improved breakfast
buffet is served in the Sherlock Holmes breakfast
room, where guests can look at a collection of
memorabilia about London's famous sleuth.
Please check the current edition of Cheap Sleeps in London for more about these accommodations.
